Global Youth Solutions (GYS)
The Global Youth Solutions programme is designed to promote entrepreneurialism, optimism, determination and also the resilience necessary to make a positive impact upon society, with the added value of enhancing attainments and raising aspirations in international settings.
It is a peer led programme that trains students as peer ‘enablers’. They work internationally with universities and youth organisations. The academic year 2013/14 was an incredibly busy year for project participants.
GYS peer enablers trained up to 30 students from Balikesir University (Turkey) in peer leadership and enabling techniques. They are now working on an Erasmus programme to take this forward long term.
The students also worked in Oman and are now delivering a training conference at the Fire College in partnership with a local non-governmental organisation (NGO) for 80 Fire College students.
The GYS team also trained up international students from Saudi and Qatar at an international conference in Bradford. On returning to their home countries these students began to develop GYS links.
As a result of diaspora links, GYS now has a live programme at the University of Gujrat (Pakistan), where a group of trained peer enablers work in the local community as volunteers and peer leaders, focussing on education and literacy development in the surrounding villages.
The GYS team collaborated with the Sochi 2014 Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (OCOG) to develop the student volunteering programme for the 2014 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games. As a legacy of this work, GYS were approached by the organisers of the FIFA World Cup 2018, which is to be held in Moscow, to work with them on their volunteer programme.
