BA (Hons) Community Leadership - Top Up

Community activists: turn your Foundation Degree or other Level 5 qualification into a degree in just one year.

Underpinned by the educational philosophy of Paulo Freire, the BA (Hons) in Community Leadership Year 3 course focuses on core themes relating to community leadership, politics and governance, faith, gender and also global society.

By completing this unique program, you will also be eligible for the Institute of Leadership and Management Level 5 in Volunteer Management. You will in addition have the opportunity to engage with the Global Community Exchange programme.

You will be part of a lively learning community, where like-minded individuals come together to share experiences and also best practice. Good community leadership starts with good collaboration and team-working skills. This peer-led programme is a great way to develop these skills and also prepare for a rewarding career.

The course is designed to progress community activists, with an appropriate Foundation Degree or other Level 5 qualification, through to a BA (Hons) and is based upon the concept of a learning community, whereby you will come together to share experiences and best practice. It works on the belief that within the context of community leadership, individuals learn best from a peer led program. The course uses action reflection praxis as a basis for learning, allowing you to take new theoretical concepts and then critically challenge them within your own communities and within an international context.

Most modules are delivered at the Burnley UCLan campus or through blended web-based learning. This campus is a brand new development with excellent teaching facilities. The programme is delivered through applied learning, where you will apply theory to practice within the context of community based placements. Modes of delivery include lectures, discussions, guided group activities, case studies and individual study elements supported by paper based and online course materials. Moreover, the Freire Institute is based within the Centre for Volunteering and Community Leadership (CVCL) at the Burnley Campus, and provides ample opportunities for extra-curricular Freire based learning and activities, including online training programmes.

The staff engaged in the delivery of the programme are all practitioners and also internationally recognised in their fields. Their role is to share their knowledge on a peer to peer basis and support learners in developing new and also innovative solutions to current issues.
